Where’s Mao? Chinese Revise History Books
NY Times
By JOSEPH KAHN
Published: September 1, 2006
BEIJING, Aug. 31 — When high school students in Shanghai crack their history textbooks this fall they may be in for a surprise. The new standard world history text drops wars, dynasties and Communist revolutions in favor of colorful tutorials on economics, technology, social customs and globalization.

Socialism has been reduced to a single, short chapter in the senior high school history course. Chinese Communism before the economic reform that began in 1979 is covered in a sentence. The text mentions Mao only once — in a chapter on etiquette. READ STORY

“With more than $1 billion in arms exports, China is the sole major arms exporter that has not entered into any multilateral agreements prohibiting arms transfers to regimes likely to use them in severe human rights abuse. As long as Beijing refuses to do so, the post-Tiananmen U.S. and European Union sanctions on arms sales to China should remain in place. And, as Amnesty recommends, all the nations of the world should join an arms trade treaty embodying the principles of international humanitarian law.”

Irish and Chinese Poets Will Not Be Gaaagled

March 17th, 2006

Easter 1916 (excerpt) William Butler Yeats
 1865-1939

No, no, not night but death;
Was it needless death after all?
For England may keep faith
For all that is done and said.
We know their dream; enough
To know they dreamed and are dead;
And what if excess of love
Bewildered them till they died?
I write it out in a verse -
MacDonagh and MacBride
And Connolly and pearse
Now and in time to be,
Wherever green is worn,
Are changed, changed utterly:
A terrible beauty is born.

The Old Dust Li Po

701 - 762 A.D.

The living is a passing traveler;
The dead, a man come home.
One brief journey betwixt heaven and earth,
Then, alas! we are the same old dust of ten thousand ages.

The rabbit in the moon pounds the medicine in vain;
Fu-sang, the tree of immortality,
has crumbled to kindling wood.
Man dies, his white bones are dumb without a word

When the green pines feel the coming of the spring.
Looking back, I sigh;
Looking before, I sigh again.
What is there to prize in the life's vaporous glory?

Oscars After Parties Haunted by Hollywood Outsider

March 6th, 2006

Behind Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon -
the ghost of Zhao Ziyang.

The ghost of Zhao Ziyang, former Chinese Prime Minister and reformer who spent 15 years under house arrest after opposing the Chinese Government’s bloody crackdown on Tiananmen Square, was spotted in tinsel town last night.

Rumors of scandalous behavior at Vanity Fair‘s annual bash at Morton‘s
and a drunken table top dance at Elton John‘s Oscar after party
at the Pacific Design Center can not confirmed at this time.
Ziyang apparently snubbed the US Weekly and Rolling Stone‘s
joint “Oscar Rocks” party at Wolfgang Puck‘s restaurant.
He was reportedly overheard telling Brokeback Mountain star Heath Ledger,
“Puck bores me.”
as the two hopped into Ziyang’s limo
and sped into the night bound for more post Oscars revelry.

Oscar Eats Hunger Strike for Human Rights

March 6th, 2006

Gaaagle Central Office suggests:

Don’t call for a worldwide hunger strike protesting
China’s human rights abuses on Oscar Day.
When will politcal activists start thinking about the media ?
Not the best day to get any attention anywhere.

The strike coincided with the Chinese Communist Party’s
National People’s Congress meeting,
AND the 78th Annual Academy Awards.

“So, our message is to try and wake everybody up, who is so intent on doing business with China and having a piece of the pie, like to say that we cannot overlook human rights abuses.”

- Sophia Bronwen to the VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980)

- human rights lawyers, writers and journalists were recently secretly kidnapped, beaten severely or illegally shut down and threatened by the Chinese regime for wanting to defend citizens wronged by the Communist regime. - Judi McLeod CFP

Internet bigwigs testify before Congress. Conspicuously displaying their Red ties.
Shi Tao, a Chinese journalist, is serving a ten-year prison sentence in China. Yahoo made his conviction possible, by providing the Chinese Government with his account information. Shi Tao revealed a government document that directed Chinese journalists not to stir up social unrest during the anniversary of the June 4 Movement (in memory of the Tiananmen crackdown). Ten years in jail. Ten years in jail. For one email. The Red Tie Brigade asserts, they were just following orders. Ten years in jail.

Superman Has No Balls

February 18th, 2006

Google is now valued at 50 billion dollars.
If you stacked hundred dollar bills 31 miles high,
you’d have 50 billion dollars.
You’d think they’d have the balls to say no to the
Chinese government’s request for search results censorship.
You’d think they’d have the balls to say -
“You want us? Take us as we are.”
Do no evil. AND Have balls.

Think what great PR that would have been.

- Gaaagle Central Office

By some estimates,
Superman can fly at mach 10, or
approx. 8,000 miles an hour.
How long would it take Superman to reach
the top of the 50 billion dollar stack of hundred dollar bills?
How long would it take Superman to fly the
length of the Great Wall of China? (5,000 miles approx.)
Actually we believe Superman can fly much faster than that.
Don’t you?
I mean, at least the speed of light, probably faster right?
What do you believe?

Gaaagle still gaaagled by Google ?

February 8th, 2006

UPDATE UPDATE: Gaaagle still appears to be gaaagled by Google. The searches from various Googles seem to return half the amount of links that they did yesterday.

Check for yourself
Search “gaaagle” on US Chinese laguage Google and compare
those results with the French Google
the Dutch Google The German Google The Japanese Google The Russian Google, Google from Senegal and Google Greenland.
Google.com

Seems unlikely that Google - a company valued at around 50 billion dollars -
would bother to gaaagle a little blog named Gaaagle.com. Does’t it ? But we’re going to keep checking just to make sure.

Has Gaaagle been Gaaagled ?

February 3rd, 2006

We found our home page listed when we searched
“gaaagle.com” and “gaaagle” in Google. Then,
the link disappeared when we searched again later.
This strange behavior has reoccurred throughout the last two days.
Try it yourself. Is this normal?
Is Google Gaaagling Gaaagle?
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE Feb 5th :
The home page now is linked,
but still, some links are apparently being removed.
Search “gaaagle” on http://Google.cn and compare
those results with the Google.com results.
Ironically, the search from the Chinese
language version of Google returns many more links.
At times, the English language Google returns 31 links
but, a half hour later, it will return 10 or fewer links.
Are results on the English language Google being swept every few hours ?
It’s unlikely that Google - a company valued at around 50 billion dollars -
would bother to gaaagle a little blog named Gaaagle.com. Isn’t it?
